Afflictions:
Disadvantages |
|
|
Dependent NPC
Dependent NPCs are built per the normal Hero rules.
Hunted
In Fading Suns, this affliction is called Vendetta. Hunteds
are built per the normal Hero rules.
Reputation
Infamous Family
The character comes from an extremely unpopular family -- known heretics,
murderers or cowards.
Social Limitations
Black Sheep
Applies to noble characters: black sheep characters are disliked by
their families and are being ostracized.
5 |
Black Sheep (Occasionally, Minor) |
|
Cloistered
Some characters have spent a considerable part of their lives removed
from society at large. They can misunderstand others or may simply be
naive.
5 |
Cloistered (Occasionally, Minor) |
|
Dark Secret
The character is hiding a secret that, if revealed, could put the character
in danger.
5 |
Character has done something that might lead
to being Excommunicated, Disowned, or something like that.
E.g.: abandoned family members (Occasionally, Minor) |
10 |
Character has done something that might lead to injury or
imprisonment. E.g.: run a psychic coven (Occasionally, Major) |
15 |
Character has done something that might lead to death. E.g.:
Plotted to assassinate a major figure (Occasionally, Severe) |
|
Escaped Serf / Escaped Slave
The character is not really a freeman, and has escaped from serfdom
or slavery.
10 |
Escaped Serf/Escaped Slave (Occasionally, Major) |
|
Excommunicated
Excommunicated characters have been outcast from the church and may
be refused a large number of services. Excommunicated characters who
violate church law may be punished by flames.
10 |
Excommunicated (Occasionally, Major) |
|
Lost Worlder
Some worlds in the Known Worlds -- Pandemonium or Iver, for example
-- have only recently been discovered. Characters from these worlds are
unfamiliar with some aspects of Known World culture and are looked upon
with some suspicion.
5 |
Lost Worlder (Frequently, Minor, not limiting
in some cultures) |
|
Orphan
The character has no family connections and no claim to any standing.
Unless orphans manage to make some livelihood or alliance, the Chainers
might "recruit" them.
5 |
Orphan (Occassionally, Minor) |
|
The Known Worlds are tremendously Xenophobic. As a result, aliens are
constantly eyed with suspicion. Some -- especially the Ukari -- are downright
disliked.
20 |
Ostracism (Ukari), (Very Frequently, Major) |
15 |
Ostracism (Other alien), (Very Frequently, Minor) |
|
Slave/Serf
The character is a slave or serf, and must follow the orders of an owner
or master. Slaves and serfs rarely have special skills, and thus player
characters are rarely slaves or serfs.
The key distinction between a slave and a serf is that serfs are generally
associated with certain lands, and cannot be sold separate from the lands.

Slave/Serf (Very Frequently, Major) |
|
Vows
Some characters take vows -- either because they follow a stringent
branch of their faith, or because they've made an unusual commitment
to another.
15 |
Vow of Silence (Very Frequently, Minor) |
10 |
Vow of Poverty (Frequently, Minor) |
5 |
Vow of Celibacy or Chastity (Occassionally, Minor) |
