The Toronto Poly Group

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are regular meetings still being held?

A: Yes, but I haven't been involved with them for quite some time. The group now uses the TorontoPoly.ca web site (although it's not often updated. Best to sign up to the mailing list to find out when the meeting is.

Q: So, what exactly goes on at a Toronto Poly Group meeting?

A: We sit around, drink coffee and chat. We try to talk about issues involved in having poly relationships, but sometimes we get distracted.

Q: But do people, y'know, break off into more intimate groups afterwards?

A: No. Many people who hear about polyamory think that a polyamory group is a great place to meet partners. That's not what the Toronto Poly Group is for. The Toronto Poly Group is a forum for poly people (or poly-friendly people) to discuss issues and thoughts about polyamory. We discourage people from trying to find dates.

Q: Can you tell me something about this group?

A: Here's the back-story. In September 1998, there was an article in the Globe and Mail about polyamory, which mentioned a poly group in Ottawa. This prompted a discussion on the newsgroup, alt.polyamory, about the need for a Toronto Poly Group.

So, a small group of people organized the meetings -- there were six of us at the first session, and five out of those six are still affiliated with the group (the sixth was an out of town partner of one of the five).

Q: Are you BDSM-friendly? Trans-friendly? Pagan-friendly?

A: In general, we try not to be too concerned by whatever community you might happen to align yourself with. The Toronto Poly Social Group has representatives from each of those three groups, and we've probably representatives from several others. A phrase used a lot on Internet newsgroups is "Your Kink is OK"; that's the my preferred attitude for the group.

Q: Are there other groups in Toronto?

A: Yes. There's an Ethical Lovers Poly Group. They meet the second Wednesday of every month from 7:30pm to 10pm at the University of Toronto Women's Centre, 563 Spadina (north of College and South of Harbord on the East Side of the circle).

I have no contact info for this group other than that information.

Q: Are there similar groups in other cities?

A: Yes, some other cities have poly groups. The best list of groups can be found at The alt.polyamory home page.

Q: Is there someone I can contact if I have questions?

A: Send e-mail to me or Siobhán (new e-mail address).
