BACKGROUND

Carter Manning had everything. He was an accomplished marine biologist and mechanical engineer. His company, Manning Enterprises, was making a name for itself as a leader in electronics equipment. And he had a beautiful and loving wife, Jennifer.

All of that changed, however, six years ago when Carter and Jennifer were vacationing in the Caribbean on their private yacht. A group of pirates hijacked their boatto use in a multi-million dollar drug run. Carter was forced to watch as the pirates killed his wife. And then the pirates threw him overboard into shark-infested waters. Carter, however, was an accomplished diver with years of experience. He was able to stay alive long enough to be rescued. The authorities helped him to return home telling him that they would do everything they could to find the pirates that murdered his wife.

But Carter had other ideas. He'd already been tinkering with designs for a miniature aqualung. To cope with his grief, he threw himself into his work and designed the Mantasuit, a self-contained underwater breathing suit with a built-in electrical "Manta Ray". Returning to the Caribbean, he tracked down the pirates, surprising them in the middle of another hijacking. The weapons in the Mantasuit allowed him to easily round up the criminals and turn them over to the authorities.

Still grief-stricken by the loss of his wife, Carter Manning decided to dedicate his life to fighting criminals and evil-doers everywhere. After returning to Indianapolis, he started making a name for himself as Manta Man. After two years, Manta Man met Evergreen and the Enforcer and the group decided to become the Crusaders.

Other members have since joined the team, and they are a respected superteam in the mid-west.

PERSONALITY

Carter Manning is a driven man. He needs to believe that there is justice in the world, and has dedicated his life to seeing that wrongs are righted.
